The Story of Sabel Syndicate

Is there anything more uncomfortable than talking about yourself? How do I share enough to let you know who I am without sounding like I’m in love with myself? I’m going to try my best. I’ve noticed my clients struggle with this too, so I want to give you enough to let you know who I am, while also sharing some perspective on how you can get to know yourself better too.

I love the creative process of writing. I think of random ideas, scribble them onto a notecard to get them out of my head and onto paper, expand on them, rearrange it, edit, expand some more, and then proofread it a couple times to finish it off. I love this chaotic, enjoyable process because it slows down the mind. This stream-of-consciousness writing approach—writing without taking a break—paces my mind. This pacing is relaxing and reveals things I didn’t know existed. One of the most fulfilling things you can do for your business and yourself is to write daily. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at what’s been lurking in the recesses of your mind.

The hardest thing for me to write about is myself. One popular writing exercise when reflecting on yourself is writing your own obituary. There are workbooks dedicated to it. They’re popular because they make you confront the most difficult question of all: “Who am I?” Writing about yourself, especially your own obituary, feels like an out-of-body experience. It’s awkward and uncomfortable, and I know I’m not the only one that feels this way because when I work with my clients it’s one of the things they struggle with the most.

I won’t speak for you, but for me and many I work with, it’s somewhat uncomfortable to admit that we’re simple people. I don’t have a thousand interests—just a couple—and most of my clients are the same. There are only a few things we love, and our lives revolve around them. Many of the most creative people I respect live this way too. They have a few things they love and their lives revolve around them.

Legendary filmmaker David Lynch loved writing and drinking coffee. His life revolved around writing and drinking coffee. Watch clips of him and you’ll hear how excited he is about those two simple things. Sitting down at Bob’s Big Boy with a cup of coffee while writing on their large napkins was his daily ritual for years.

Your passions make you who you are, not just what you do. Clichés like “Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life…” hang around for a reason. Fulfilled people say this, but so do regretful ones when reflecting on the life they could have created at the end of their lives.

I recently heard an interview with Tom Cruise, and he asked the viewer directly: “What is your passion and why do you pursue it?” He acknowledged his passion is making films because it combines his interest in people, the pursuit of learning, and the art of telling stories. Everything about it, from the people he works with to the equipment they use, all feeds his curiosity.

My clients want to know the real person behind the business and yours do to. So we must answer that question… “Who am I?” One of my core philosophies when creating marketing for my clients is that people do business with people, not businesses, and I believe that. They care about who you are and want to know who you are.

Sabel Syndicate is a combination of all the simple passions I love most… meeting interesting people, traveling, copywriting, videography, reading, learning, being creative, and sitting back observing. I’m very nosy about people and their stories. I’m interested in meeting them, learning who they are, where they come from, how they see the world, and helping them improve the lives of others through memorable marketing for their business.

I’ve been told by many I have a unique perspective of people and the world. This could either be a compliment or an insult, I’m not really sure to be honest, but framing is everything, so I choose to frame it as a compliment!

I believe this allows me to get into the minds of others to empathize with them. Empathy is the foundation of truly exceptional marketing because it allows you to connect with people on a deeper level by acknowledging you know where they’ve been and how you can help them get to where they want to be.

Selfishly, I only work with people I find interesting. If I don’t have overwhelming interest in them and what they do, I feel I’m doing them a disservice and won’t pursue it. I keep an open journal of interesting ideas and observations I have. The universe has a way of rewarding this because I always seem to stumble on someone who I think would be a great fit for a marketing idea I have in my journal.

This approach keeps me excited and engaged with every client and each project at all times. I’ll always be thinking of things that I share with them. Inspiration is all around us and it could be something as simple as a review I read that gives me an idea for something we should create. “Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life…”

I’ve always had a strong interest in science, specifically psychology and the human body, because it’s so relevant, it’s us! I’m interested in psychology because I’ve always wanted to better understand people so I could better connect with them. I wasn’t a very social person growing up so reading about psychology felt like the cheat code to life. It allowed me to better understand people, have more patience, and above all else, become a better communicator.

Marketing and psychology are partners because memorable marketing is nothing more than a conversation between someone who can help someone that needs help. Memorable marketing is built on being able to understand someone and communicating how you can help.

We are more similar than we are different. We all have the same overlapping desires in life. We all want the same thing: a strong sense of self-worth. We all want to achieve the state of nirvana that only a strong sense of self-worth can give us. We want to know our lives have meaning and that we matter. Having a positive relationship with ourselves is the universal pursuit of every person alive. Each business owner has the ability and duty to help their clients achieve that in their own way.

The human body is another fascination of mine. It’s a bit trippy to read about it, whether it be how the brain functions or how we age, and realize we are reading about ourselves. It’s not like studying fish in the ocean or a tiny nebula in the night sky, when you read about the human body you are reading about yourself. It’s a humbling experience because you learn just how fragile and incredible we are as human beings. Each and every one of us is the most complex machine known to man. It’s beautiful.

Given those it should be no surprise that most of my clients are doctors. It works out well because the entire world of healthcare comes off as stagnant and soulless. There isn’t an industry I can think of that’s as vital yet poorly marketed. This gigantic disconnect must be fixed and I’m proud to contribute to it daily with my clients. I focus on private practice doctors because they have the closest proximity to those they want to help.

I’ve seen how helping doctors improve their practice’s marketing improves the lives of their patients firsthand. What I create with them, whether it be a video series or article, is often the catalyst for someone to take the action they’ve been thinking about for years. I get an enormous amount of fulfillment knowing what I create for my doctors has that type of impact on their patients.

Being creative allows me to look at the world a certain way and see inspiration everywhere. There are many connections I see that my clients don’t. Creativity includes the style, tone, and format of marketing. It can be applied to a whole lineup of options including videos, photos, websites, social media posts, blogs, emails, print pieces, and patient gifts. All the things I showcase on this website are ways we can have better conversations with your clients.

I hope this gave you a window into who I am and also had you reflect on who you are. You have the ability to stand out with your story, but it’s only possible by having your own media department that creates exceptional marketing for your business. If you’ve made it this far I'd like to formally apply to be your one-man marketing machine!
